Pinterest has a ton of barn door designs. I usually have a good idea and a clear vision of the details when I start a project. However, I did not have a clear vision for the design of the barn door for the basement bonus room. I really had no idea what design I wanted, so I did a lot of Pinterest and Instagram searching. It was not until I came across this image on IG from The Handmade Home that I knew what I wanted.

I think this door is beautiful, but there was no need for incorporating stained glass in our door. I love the 3 panels and the idea of using bead board for the panels. AND I could use up some left over bead board from the bonus room ceiling that I had taking up space in my garage. Win win!
I found this barn door hardware and handle on Amazon. Both are great quality and a good price. Once I had the hardware, design and materials, it was time to get my dad to come help put it all together. (I apologize for my lack of in-progress photos in this post.)
First, my dad built the frame with 1X4s. Then he routed out the back of the frame so he could inset the bead board panels. Once the panels were in, he nailed them into place. I did paint the panels and 1X4s prior to assembly but then I had to add another coat once the door was hung.
Now, lets get to the fun part.
Here is the door hung, caulked and painted.
The sliding door hardware is a horseshoe style. We had to place the horseshoes in from the edges a bit due to the fact that the doorway is larger than a standard doorway. We were not going to have enough clearance when the door is open unless we did that.
I decided to center the handle on the 3rd panel for no other reason than I liked the way it looked. A taller person may opt to place it higher up but this way works perfect for us.
Behind this door is our laundry area and unfinished basement storage. There is no way I am showing you that mess!
It is absolutely perfect!! I am obsessed with it and now I am thinking where else I can incorporate a barn door (or 5) in my house!
